The ins and outs of surviving the 4th Trimester – Shannon Stokes

The ins and outs of surviving the 4th Trimester

Written by Shannon Stokes AKA @mums_bubs_nutritionist

Since I will be experiencing my forth trimester soon and I have a lot of mumma followers that are pregnant, I have asked for some nutritional information and some basic survival technicques from naturopath Shannon Stokes from Mums and Bubs Nutrition Clinic. She is a mum herself to two littleys and has survived (just) the 4th trimester twice.

Take it away Shannon…

The journey to becoming pregnant is a magical one. Its either a ‘surprise’ I am here type scenario, a long awaited and joyous time. The journey itself is nuts! Pregnancy is a whole other kettle of fish, a completely natural yet unnatural experience. Getting pregnant, staying pregnant and just being pregnant is an insane journey, and that is just the beginning.

You are a mumma! Congratulations, baby is here you have been through a marathon of hurdles, a tonne of happy gas, 9 epidural attempts, a vacuum delivery, 12 different hands up your clacker at once, an episiotomy or 9th degree tear. You now have that little bundle of joy in your arms. Perhaps you are feeling those kooky love spell feelings straight away, or perhaps you think, oh jesus what have I done? All totally normal feelings. I remember thinking oh, he’s not very cute, in fact he is a bit strange looking and gee my vagina is killing…. me where are those frozen condoms at, all in the same breath!

… All of that aside, baby is here and it’s a whirlwind few days in the beginning.

How does one survive through this sleep deprivation? The healing of the whole birth thing is one thing, but then perhaps breastfeeding is hurting like a bugger and you have grazed nipples or sterilizing a bottle seems to take forever and a day at 3am. You aren’t alone, this period is earth shatteringly exhausting, scary and exciting all rolled into one. Cue the 4th Trimester! So mumma, whilst we learn to look after this babe ( I am happy to leave that to the never ending advice from the mum tribe, in-laws and experts) I am here to help YOU make some tiny changes in your day to keep you thriving.

It starts with you and ends with you. Everything else in between is that tiny babies’. Upon your first morning wake up, (ok, so the first moment you get up for the day) refresh your self with a big glass of filtered water, and take a deep breath. That’s it for now. No matter what is happening, this is a must! Then tick it off daily as it is non-negotiable.

Below are some of my favourite 4th trimester survival guidelines for all new mums and even dads.

1. Do NOT stop your multi, infact this is a time to ensure your nutritional status is up with that of the very best it has ever been. Even if you aren’t breastfeeding.

2. Eat foods rich in good fats, think avocado, coconut oil, nuts seeds, oily fish such as sardines, salmon, qood quality extra virgin olive oil drizzled on eeeeeevvvverything.

3. Make sure you are having macronutrients with each meal and at least a palm size portion of protein at each meal. (macronutrients are the essential nutrients needed in large amounts to sustain energy and basic health. The 3 macros are Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates)

4. Take a quality probiotic daily

5. Don’t focus on trying to lose the baby weight, give yourself a break.

6. Ask for things, I wish I did this more with my first. Ask for help! (you can’t get away with asking for washing to be folded and home cooked meals to be dropped when they are 3.. dammit)! Even ask for a box of nappies to be dropped off. Use that ‘new mum’ thing a little..

7. Say no! if you aren’t up for visitors then say no, if you aren’t up for your cousins and nephews coming over and running a muck, just say no, but don’t feel guilty or think twice about it, they will understand…. And If they dont then.. meh… they will get over it.

8. Accept that some days are bad and some days are good, ebs and flows ladies, mountains and rivers.

9. Spend 5 minutes a day with your legs up the wall, relax those hips and lower back, take 10 deep breaths. (Again, non-negotiable)

10. Spend 10 minutes a day minimum outside in bright morning day light to ensure your body knows its day time and to help regulate those sleep /wake hormones

11. Don’t feel guilty, if you want to look at your phone while feeding bubs, do it. If you want to stay in bed, do it. If watching Oprah is your jam, do it, indulge a little and enjoy doing it. Stop feeling guilty. Guilty feelings radiate negative energy. If it has been a few weeks in a row then, maybe ask for a little help from a loved one and reach out if you are doing it tough… remember its all of those crazy hormones doing crazy things.

12. If you aren’t coping, reach out. You will be surprised to know that a lot of mothers find the fourth trimester insanely hard. No matter who you are, how together you think everyone is, its not the case. Speak up and your tribe will answer.

Enjoy those long loving stares into your babies eyes, explore their features and be fascinated with the whole process.. this too shall pass and then all of a sudden it’s a Tuesday night and you are writing about how to cope through the 4th trimester to a friend in need. Everyone struggles and if you think that its all too much, please reach out. It does get easier and it does get better. Trust me, I never thought I would see past the sleep deprivation either.

Thank you so much Shannon for your time if you wish to contact Shannon or learn more about her, her details are as follows.

Alice In Pregnancyland #32weeks-38weeks

Pregnancy Emotions. Pregnancy Eating. Pregnancy Exercise. Pregnancy Style.

I actually cannot believe I am typing the last blog of the Alice In Pregnancyland series. (for now haha) I remember chatting To Tahlia about collaborating with me for the #bumpstyle shoots and now here we are at 37 nearly 38 weeks finishing off the bump series. I have really loved building a friendship with Tahlia from @wyldefolkstudio_ while we did the photoshoots she is such a kind hearted person. I now have a friendship for life with her. Not to mention how blessed I was to collaborate with so many gorgeous labels and maternity brands. throughout the 9 months. A huge thank you to everyone that followed the series and continued to send through such beautiful feedback. Big Love to you all.

Pregnancy Emotions

The last few weeks I have been on a emotional roller coaster. I have been so excited to meet the little one, I have had mum guilt with my one on one time with Cruzie, I have cried happy tears and I have cried god knows what tears. To me having a good cry really does help me just let it all out, breathe and then let it go. All these new emotions feel like it’s my heart is expanding and I am ready to meet our new little one now.

I finished up work at 36 weeks. Best decision as I was going to work to 37 weeks, the heaviness of nursing and being on my feet got to me a little. So I am so glad to be on maternity leave. It feels so different not having to go to work again.

I have been making the most of my time with Cruzie too. I have been taking him to singing and reading at the library, reading and extra snuggles at night time, park hangs and babycino dates. I am loving being off work with him again.

Everyone has been asking how Cruzie has been? Does he know? I think he knows a change is coming. He won’t let anyone rub my belly but David, he pushes their hand away or pulls my top down. We brought him a little dolly and he has been kissing it, changing its nappy, pushing it around in a pram. It’s so cute to watch. I think he will be a great big brother.

I keep telling myself that I need to slow down as my body is tired, but its true “nesting” is a real thing. I keep thinking of new things to do and clean. I forget to rest and I am on the go all day. Then I have the worse braxton hicks and back ache in the evening. So I should listen to all the advice and just put my feet up. Haha easier said than done though. Plus entertaining my little man. He sleeps well in the afternoon so I should just lay down then and watch some Offspring on tv. Maybe tomorrow? haha.

I went and seen my midwife for a 36 week scan and check up. The cheeky bubbas legs are sitting frog legged but the head is right down there. I keep thinking in my head that the baby will be here early because Cruz came early but I shouldn’t get my hopes up. I discussed my birth plan and what I wanted. My birth plan is to have a natural birth, hopefully not be on the monitor like last time, have a bath or hot shower, use essential oils and just have David in there. David is my rock and he really did help me through the breathing techniques last time. I do still feel anxious about the birth experience and labour but I am just trying not to think about it, what will be will be.

Pregnancy Eating.

With eating I have been a bit all over the place.

I wake up so hungry and have to eat before I go for a walk. For breakfast I normally have smoothies or protein pancakes. Thats its the I just swap it up between the two.

Then for snacks I have almonds, nuts, apple or a bliss ball. Sipping on so much raspberry leaf tea to ha.

Lunch is lots of greens and a source of protein or a chia sourdough with cheese, figs and cucumber sandwich or the same combo on rice cakes.

I am obsessed with Bolognese at the moment with zoodles (zucchini pasta), I am addicted love it. I also love white fish or salmon with greens for dinner, I have gone off all brown rice and sweet potato probably because my belly already fills so fall at night.

Cravings – organic milk chocolate from Flannerys Health Shop … YUM!!!!

Pregnancy Exercise

Walking 30-45minutes around the block (filled with hills) but very slowly as I get pelvic pressure. I put my podcast on and enjoy the metime I love it. Makes me feel better. I love doing about 20-40 push ups daily on the kitchen bench and 20 squats on the shower too. About 3 times a week I use my little 2kg weights and do a little arm workout too. If I have having an exhausting day I just don’t exercise at all. Maybe just do a stretch. The last week I have really slowed down, but thats okay, my body needs the rest.

Pregnancy Style

So besides loose boho styles and a few tight comfortable maternity dresses I have been living in maternity leggings and a jumper. Argh so comfy. I do love dressing up the bump, but I feel my wardrobe has become very limited and don’t really want to add to it till the baby is here.

For this #bumpstye shoot I wore a dress I purchased for a hens day a few months back. Its called the FAWN WRAP DRESS and I brought it from the @theselfstyler online. Guess what they just restocked it too. You can buy it HERE. Its perfect to take you through your pregnancy journey and will be great for breastfeeding too. Its not actually a maternity dress but it should be its so comfortable.

Tahlia and I decided for the last bump photoshoot we would find a beautiful spot with long grass (secret location) and invite David and Cruz to come along for some family photos. We had a lovely afternoon watching the sunset and Tahlia came with her family too, so nice. I hope you all enjoy the photos.

Thank you again for reading.

Ava Lola Organics – The Pregnancy Box.

I recently received a wonderful gift box from Ava Lola Orgnaics. To my surprise it wasn’t filled with gifts for the new baby, but gifts for me? I felt oh so special and I thought to myself it is just what a tired pregnant mumma needs – some mumma metime and pampering.

A box filled with pampering goodies for a pregnant mumma.

Inside this box of goodies was some great organic skin care products that were safe to use during pregnancy.

It is filled some brands and products I had heard of, however some new ones that I have now became a huge fan of. It’s was great to trial all the new brands, but I loved that you received the actual size samples of the products #winning.

I think it is such a great gift idea for any expecting mumma for her baby shower or a congratulations president, as the bubba seems to be the one that gets spoilt. You could simply just #treatyourself too haha. You totally deserve the luxe relaxing time fir yourself, especially because you are the one growing the bubba and that can take its toll on your mind and body.

Inside The Pregnancy Box is

Mama Body Tea Pregnancy OR Morning Wellness Tea 28 serves

Harvest Bliss Mama & Baby Milk Bath 100g

Tiny Tonics Stretch Mark Oil 125ml

Harvest Bliss Peppermint Foot Soak 30g

Harvest Bliss Milk Bath for Mumma and Baby and Peppermint Foot Soak
Mama Body Tea Pregnancy Tea and Tiny Tonics Stretch Mark Oil

Below are some images of me using the products as I genuinely love trailing everything I am sent. I did use some of the products with Cruzie included in the relax/metime as sometimes it’s just how it is. While he played with his toys in the bath I would be relaxing my sore legs and bump. I loved  sitting back relaxing and just enjoyed watching him learn new things. Multitasking right?

Enjoying a Milk Bath with Cruzie Poozie.

Massaging the bump 🤰

Enjoying the foot soak. It’s pure bliss 🙏🏼💕
Sipping on pregnancy tea and having a read.

I highly recommend The Pregnancy Box to other expecting mummas, as I used every single one of the products provided in the box, I made sure of it. Haha. Can I get another? 🙋🏼

Thank you again for taking the time to read my review on such a gorgeous  gift box. I look forward to purchasing these for my expecting mumma friends, as they all deserve a bit of pampering.

#showtherealyou – Lou Carter AKA founder of @babylunoshop

My #showtherealyou girl this week is a #girlboss, a #mumma to two boys, a #basketballerswife,  a #traveller… and I could go on and on with the #hashtag titles for Mrs Lou Carter.
From the first time I spoke to Lou (over email), I was inspired straight away. She was so professional about collaborating together for her business Baby Luno,  yet she had such a calming, nurturing, aura about her and was so supportive to a hormonal pregnant mumma (in my first trimester) like me. I instantly clicked with Lou and we have continued to grow and blossom our friendship since that very first email over 6 months ago.
I haven’t actually met Lou in person because she has been running her business from Europe (even though it is Australian based), while her husband follows his dreams as a professional basketballer. I cannot wait till she returns as we can have a wine (maybe post breastfeed though haha).
I know you will love learning about how Lou manages her online business, deals with the everyday mumlife challenges and  travels Europe.
I introduce to you all …
Lou carter AKA founder of @babylunoshop
Favourite hot drink?

COFFEEEEE! I get way too excited when I about to have coffee and I drink way too much of it. I like it strong a completely black. The coffee is terrible in the UK (sorry UK readers) and I miss my Melbourne long blacks dearly.

Can you tell me who the REAL Lou Carter is?

Wow! Tough question! The short version – I am a mother of 2 boys (1 and 3 yrs old), wife to a professional basketball player, living in a different city every year and founder of online baby shop, babyluno.com

Here is the longer version…

I am originally from Sweden but I have hardly lived there. From age 2, I grew up in Luxembourg (a small country in the middle of Europe) then went to Sweden for 3 years of high school and then went to Australia to travel and met my (now) husband. I was head over heels so I decided to move to Australia for University at UNSW in Sydney.

My husband is a professional basketball player and usually his contracts are about 8-10 months so we move around a lot for his career. In the past 10 years we have lived in Sydney two separate times, Melbourne three separate times, twice in Adelaide, a stint in Perth, a year in Auckland New Zealand, three different cities in Sweden, lived in Spain for a few months and are currently living in Plymouth in the U.K. If someone asked me where my home is, I wouldn’t be able to give them an answer. My blood is Swedish and very proud of that beautiful country but when I am in Sweden, I feel like a little bit of a tourist. I probably feel more at home in Australia now but I definitely feel like a tourist there too. I do have 2 little Aussie boys now though who have that beautiful Aussie accent :). I am pretty good at just making wherever we are, our home. Home is definitely just where the heart is.

My two sons are 3 and 16 months. I am absolutely loving being a mother. There are definitely tough days, especially when dealing with sleep deprivation and we live far away from family and friends so we don’t get much of a break but seeing these creatures, that I made, develop is the coolest thing in the world. To be honest, I had no big interest in kids before I had my own. I was very career driven, loved traveling and loved a party but now I feel that children are the most important thing in life – both mine and other children. So that is one way how the REAL me has changed a lot in recent years.

My newest baby is my online baby shop called Baby Luno babyluno.com, which is based in Australia. My career background is in marketing and especially online marketing so I decided to make use of that and joining it with my passion of babies. It is only over a year old so it is still taking off but I love having my own business especially as a mother. I have something that is mine and something to do other than just being a mum and I am continuously learning new things about having your own business. Running the business having two toddlers around comes with some challenges and running a business from overseas is also challenging at times. The time difference means that the best time to chat to customers and suppliers is in my morning but this is usually when I have the kids. I do have a lot of mum-guilt as I hate being on my laptop or phone in front of the kids so I really try not to be, only for a few urgent matters. However, my husband does help with the kids a lot. Just as I am supportive of my husband’s dreams, he is incredibly supportive of my dreams and goals so we make it work quite well.

These are the things that make up the REAL Louise Carter but other than that I am quite open-minded and go with the flow, but also quite passionate about things I care about. I try and always look on the bright side of life, I laugh quite easily (so my husband thinks he’s the funniest person ever), I am very close to my family even though we are all spread out, love meeting new people and love sports!

What drove you to create your Instagram account and online business Baby Luno?

I have my personal Instagram account @mrsloucarter that I created mainly to keep in touch with all family and friends around the world and to keep them up to date with what we are doing. Since we live so far away from all our friends and family, it is a nice way to share with everyone what happened that day since I don’t have many others to chat to.

When we were living in New Zealand when my first boy was just a baby, I found it so difficult to find the baby products that I wanted and I would try to find them online but only American websites would pop up that didn’t ship to where I was so the idea for Baby Luno was born. I finally launched the website when I was 7 months pregnant with my second baby. It was maybe not ideal timing but also because of that, I was my main audience so I would market the way that I would find attractive and bring in products that I loved. I run the Baby Luno Instagram account myself @babylunoshop. I try and add a few bits and pieces that are not just marketing, like some blog posts from, for example, the amazing Alice in Healthyland :). You want to give your followers some extra value. It’s all a learning process.

Not many people know this about you, but you run your online boutique Baby Luno, you are a mumma and you support your husband by living overseas with him while he chases his dream? Tell us more how you do this with children? This blows my mind! What a life! Amazing Lou!

Aww, thank you! Well we started moving around due to my husband’s career before kids and before Baby Luno. It was exciting getting to live in different places so I was loving it. It was maybe not ideal for my career. I was lucky enough to get jobs everywhere we went but we did decide to have children when we did since that way I didn’t need to work for a while and could just focus on raising them.

Of course, moving around does get more difficult when kids are involved, especially when you throw in different time zones. Sleeping routines are not always easy to follow and I am one sleep-deprived mama. Right now we are in the process of moving again and I am starting to sell and give away a few of the kids’ toys and it is not easy but I am so impressed at how well they are taking it. My 3-year old is now really excited to give away his toys and the other day he said “the boys who don’t have any toys will get happy”. That melted my heart. We may be raising a little minimalist. We have also started telling him how he will start at a new Swedish Kindy soon and he is so excited about it. I am amazed at how adaptable children can be – probably more than us adults.

There are definitely some challenges to living like we do but we just choose to focus on the amazing positives. We get to live in different parts of the world – really become a part of the culture, connect with people that we would have never met otherwise, see how a country really works and have very different life experiences. We love taking advantage of these opportunities especially when the kids are young before they start school. In the end, it is all about your story.

My husband’s career will not go on forever so we will settle down in one place soon but being from different parts of the world, I am sure we will always be travelling a little bit. It will eventually be nice to have our own place and decorate the kids rooms with our own furniture that we love and most importantly make really deep connections with people, be able to attend our friends’ weddings, birthdays etc that we have missed way too many of.

What is your favourite quote or mantra?
My favourite quote/mantra is definitely “The happiest people don’t HAVE the best of everything, they MAKE the best of everything”. It doesn’t matter what you have, where you live or what the weather is like, you can still make life into the best adventure by just deciding to be happy and making it the best. It is all about your attitude.

My husband and I also always have this saying when crazy things happen or offers come up from teams in cities far away, we always just say “It’s all about your story”. Make life the best story you can. When you are lying on your deathbed, that is what you will remember.

How often do you find the time to move your body?

I go to the gym at least twice a week where I either do a Body Pump class or HIIT class and take my boys with me to the creche there that they love. This is a booked in time that I never miss so no excuse. I get in to different routines in every place we move to. It depends what is best accessible to me – sometimes it’s bikram yoga or playing sports or just running but I have never felt in better shape than what I am in right now, which I am quite proud of. I may also have my boys to thank for that since I am constantly running after them (who are both sports crazy) so I hardly stop moving my body.

Favourite activewear?

I almost only wear SIX30 activewear. The company was started by one of my friends and I absolutely love her designs. She is also one of the people that inspired me to start Baby Luno because she also runs the website luxefitness.com.au which is a one-stop activewear shop collecting the best activewear. I love supporting small businesses and especially when it’s someone I know. I also loved Cadenshae’s nursing sports bras while breastfeeding – this is why I started stocking their products on babyluno.com

Something you practice daily that promotes self love?

I try and listen to a motivational YouTube video every day to get my mind straight. My favourite is Tony Robbins. He talks a lot about how you are in control of how you feel – it is a decision. The thing that always lifts my spirit though is just putting on some great music and dancing around. It usually turns into a family dance party since my two boys love to dance and sometimes hubby joins in too.

Favourite product/outfit currently on Baby Luno?

I love every single product on Baby Luno. That is why I bring them in because I want to make my favourites more available to other mothers because I had trouble finding all the things that I wanted when my boys were babies. I am so impressed at all the mumpreneurs out there that have created these amazing innovative products. The nursing activewear is definitely a best seller. Also I am really trying to collect the best baby bags out there and have brought in my favourite Swedish baby brand, Elodie Details, to make it easily accessible for all my fellow Aussies :).

What advice would you give to other people out there wanting to start a blog/business?

Just decide to do it and decide that it will be a success! You don’t have to have all the answers before you start, you can figure it out along the way. Just make a decision about something and go 100% – if it is the wrong decision, you will either quickly realise it or you will be so invested in it that you will make that the right decision in the end and you will be a lot further than if you hadn’t made a decision at all so don’t be afraid. Everyone makes mistakes but you just make sure that you learn from each mistake so the more mistakes you make, the better you will be because you will have learnt so much.

It is also great to have a mentor. Talk to someone that has done it before and get some tips rather than trying to reinvent the wheel on your own. They would have already made some mistakes and learned from them so then you don’t need to make those mistakes again and you can learn from their mistakes as well.

Making pregnancy that little bit easier with @fertilemind

Being pregnant is an exciting time in your life. You get to welcome a new little bubba into the world. However sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge throughout those 9 months to stay comfortable and still do the things you love while carrying that bundle of joy.

I have recently teamed up with @fertilemind as an brand ambassador. I was super excited for this collaboration as I got to trial some goodies that made my #bumplife easier. I thought I would share with you all the products I have trialled and grown to love and why?

Firstly a little about Fertile Mind

Christine is the founder of the Australian company, Fertile Mind. This gorgeous lady knows first hand what a growing mumma, new mumma and her baby needs to blossom as she is a mum of four herself. With her business partner Pete, they disign, manufactures and distribute, maternity accessories such as belly belt (Christine’s invention), maternity clothes, maternity tops, maternity jeans, baby carriers and breastfeeding pillows. Christine stocks some big brands you will already know and love as well as distributing her own designs.

A little under a month ago I received a very helpful maternity bundle from Fertile Mind, filled with amazing products to make my pregnancy that little bit more easier and comfortable.

I received some maternity knickers, maternity activewear tights, the belly belt (argh-MAZING), nursing every day bra (do I have to take it off) and a cute little comfort toy for Cruzie as a special thank you gift.

Enji Activewear Maternity Tights and SuperBra Nursing & Maternity Bra

These Enji Fertile Mind Activewear Tights are so supportive, I have worn these maternity tights so much. Literally in the wash and back on my legs and over my bump haha. I wish I knew about buying a good pair of maternity tights like these sooner! They have a good amount of stretch in them but not to much either. They are still supportive enough to stay up during the different stages of your bump growth. I love the high waisted band as it helps to hold the bump up when exercising, perfect for low to high intensity workouts. They are the perfect style to team with your favourite active wear tops and do not scream “daggy maternity” at all. I think they will be great post birth to as they have the supportive high waist band around the stomach 10/10 from me! LOVE!

Fertile Mind SuperBra for Maternity and Nurisng.

This is the Fertile Mind SuperBra, I wish I had one for every day of the week. Feels so nice on the top of my bump and is so comfortable you can sleep in it. I am still a B nearly a C cup and I love it. This is another item of clothing that ends up on me or in the wash. Different sizes available. You can also breastfeed in this bra to, so it will take you through your maternity to postpartum journey. I will probably still be wearing this baby a few years later to haha. Probably should invest in more of them . So so comfy! Highly recommend! I have read so many positive reviews on this little number! Definitely a winner in my books.

Fertile Mind Belly Belt

Now these little pieces of material are a blessing to all women! They extend the life of your pre pregnancy wardrobe in the pant department. So you don’t have to say goodbye to your favourite jeans just yet (unless your arse grows to big for them like mine hahaha) but I have been able to wear my favourite work pants without slipping on the horrible maternity style ones from my work (thank god). So the Fertile Mind Belly Belt is definitely something I believe would be a great investment to add to your wardrobe. Plus the Belly Belt is such a great price, it is only 24.99, which is so much cheaper than buying lots of expensive maternity pants.

Without the belt trying to wear my favourite pants hahaha
2 Perfect Fit Maternity Knickers

The 2 Perfect Fit Maternity Knickers are super comfortable, they fit just under the bump. They have soft, broad elastic bands so they don’t leave those nasty lines behind on your tummy. I love how they don’t restrict your tummy and are perfect teamed with a belly band around your tummy for extra support.

Cruzie with his little comforter doggies from @fertilemind
Loves it so much. Has snuggles it every sleep since he got it

Cruzies favourite of all from the bundle is the little comfort doggie. Perfect to help him settle for his naps. Especially when mumma is busy with the newborn. So thanks for this extra special gift for Cruz, Fertile Mind he adores it.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you gained some useful knowledge about these amazing products to help make pregnancy a little bit easier for you all as it did for me.

CAVEMAN KITCHEN – Nourish. Thrive. Repeat.

As you all know, eating healthy is extremely important to me. I love creating nutritious meals for my little tribe. However sometimes the craziness of life kicks in.. haha who am I kidding? The crazy, busy, happens every day! I was super excited when I came across, Caveman Kitchen on Instagram. Caveman Kitchen thrive to deliver healthy, nourishing, and downright delicious meals, that are delivered right to your front doorstep (I found this part extremely convenient).

Two weeks ago, I was delivered the Caveman Kitchen meals (conveniently before lunch) and when I put little Cruz down to nap, I dived into my first meal. I had the Chicken, Pesto & Haloumi Stack and boy did it taste amazing compared to my daily Chicken/Tuna and Broccoli. The meal tasted fresh and the ingredients list was exactly what you could see when you looked down at your plate. The ingredients list is super important to me, I am very cautious of what I put in my body, especially while being pregnant. Below is an image of proof of the ingredients in the meal that I ate. No perspectives, no added sugar and they use good fats in all their meals prepared!I tell you what? It certainly feels like Christmas getting the meals delivered and its so fun going through them all, deciding which to get when. I lot less stressful that my usual meal prep manner haha.

Chicken, Pesto & Haloumi Stack.

The rest of the weeks lunches continued to taste amazing. I love cooking and preparing my meals, but on work days I am very time poor, so I was very impressed that all I had to do was take a meal from the fridge and put it into my lunchbox. Meal prep made super easy. I think these meals would be fantastic for someone that loves eating good, nourishing food however tends to go off track with their meal plan. My husband took a meal to work to and he was very satisfied with one of the larger meals. He also found the meals to be super fresh, very tasteful and didn’t have that yucky frozen taste that most “frozen boxed” meals have in the supermarket.

Ordering the meals is super easy, you click onto their website (here) to join the tribe, choose the meals or plans and as they say “chow down”. The meals are delivered every Monday, so this sets you up beautifully for the week ahead. The company offer a wide range of plans to suit you and your lifestyle, or even better a “build you own” plan for those of you that like to pick and choose your meals. Their is no lock in contracts and you can cancel at anytime. The website also has a “chat now” application if you require any immediate assistance.

Check out the gorgeous team at Caveman Kitchen in their “About Us” segment on their webpage here, I had a smile reading about their vision and passion for health and wellness. I love their “meet the team” section. I love seeing where my food comes from and learning about the people behind the business.

#showtherealyou @_nadinemuller

NADINE MULLER AKA @_nadinemuller is you follow this gal on Insta. Remember her name beauties, because this gorgeous woman is a #gamechanger. She is a true inspiration and I LOVE watching this lady chase her dreams and smash some of her biggest life goals (and she is not finished yet). I started following Nadine when I gave birth to Cruz, her little boy Madden is the same age as Cruz. We both shared similar passions, we both preaching our love for nourishing foods, fitness and our boys. We are both also Registered Nurses. I have always found Nadine so easy to relate and connect with to as this she totally  keeps it real!

I got to meet this beauty earlier  this year, we did a workout together at F45 and then had a cute brunch date with our babes. Such a fun day chatting about motherhood, training and life in general.

I know you will love Nadine as much as I do. Sit down, pop your feet up, have a cuppa tea and enjoy this weeks #showtherealyou feature @_nadinemuller.

Thanks for sharing Nadine.. big love always girl!

Favourite hot drink?

Ohhhh as I type away on this I’m currently sipping on a lemon infused green tea, but there is also nothing better than a warm hot choccie to unwind before calling it a night… In daylight hours I’m a Cappuccino girl on almond milk!

Can you tell me who the REAL Nadine Muller is?

I was born in Melbourne, but grew up on the gorgeous Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I come from very humble beginnings; my family didn’t have copious amounts of money growing up, but in saying that there were no shortages of LOVE in my household. My parents did their very best and worked extremely hard to provide for my older brother and I and whilst I didn’t think it at the time, looking back now we had everything we needed and more, much more. I wouldn’t change a thing.

In true family tradition, I joined the military (Air Force) soon after graduating high school. I’ve been enlisted in the military now for almost ten years and my experiences and exposures have truly been second to none. I’ve made some everlasting friendships and have had a number of career highlights and memories that I hold so very dear.

Despite health and fitness being a cornerstone to my personal and professional life, in my early twenties saw me diagnosed with advanced Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia and Severe Dysplasia to Carcinoma Insitu; in simple terms Cervical Cancer came knocking on my door. When the word ‘potential hysterectomy’ was brought up during one of my many specialist appointments my entire world had come crashing down. When I look back on this testing time I see that I truly am one of the lucky ones who get to share my story, and whose dream of becoming a Mum came true, despite theodds that were stacked up against me. This health scare was a very testing time and it allowed me to re-evaluate my outlook on life and was a real game-changer. Like anything battles are there to be fought and in my case won, and getting the all-clear and becoming a Mum was the utmost silver lining to my journey. (Which reminds me to REMIND YOU who is reading this – If you are due for a papsmear please book in an appointment to get it done).

Anyhow a lot has happened since then, most significantly was meeting the love of my life, my best mate, (also the one who grinds my gears like no one else can) but truly my life’s accomplice – My king -Dane.

We met and hit the ground running….Why wait? We couldn’t have been more sure! After 6 months we were engaged, married a year later (we were 9 weeks pregnant at our wedding) and then just like that the littlest love of our life Madden James entered our world and boy did he expand our hearts and continues to do so everyday J

SO here I am sharing my journey particularly surrounding my chaotic little juggle of mum life, work life as an RN and a PT, my health and fitness, and spreading self-love, confidence and positivity through my social media platforms. Why – because empowered women, empower women (One of my fav quotes!). I genuinely want to prove that absolutely anybody can achieve their fitness, personal and professional dreams, goals, hopes and aspirations despite any challenges that they may encounter along the way. Likewise that what we see everyday in social media isn’t always how it truly is, that raw and honest will always prevail!

Tell me about a day in the life of Nadine Muller?

Well whether I like it or not my little one is much like his Mumma and likes to seize the day and be up at the crack of dawn. To make for a smooth morning, the night before I’ve packed the car, breakfasts and lunches (thanks to weekend meal prep), have everything laid out to a T so our morning rush is ‘less-rushed’ for the lack of a better word. I usually jump in for a morning session at my PT workplace (F45) at 4.45am or at my local 24hr gym and am back home no later than 6am, I quickly trade parenting with hubby so he can then head to work the second I’m back in the door. I breastfeed Madden, I then sneak in as many kisses and cuddles in whilst feeding Madden breakfast and getting us both ready before dropping him into daycare by 6.30am in order for me to get to my nursing shift in the Emergency Department by 7am through to 1530hrs. After that, depending on what day of the week it is, 2 nights a week I put my PT hat on and start at 4pm and work til about 8pm, the other arvo’s/night’s I head straight home from my nursing shift, pick up Madden from day care and have family time until lights are out and we do it all over again for the working week!! Weekends are very much about my boys and I and we try to keep relatively active but with the main focus on quality time together and catching up on housework, grocery shopping and food prepping so we can go in prepared for the week ahead! Days are hectic and nights are short, and I guess I’m very much still finding my ‘balance’, if there is ever such a thing, I’ve sought advice and support from my other working mumma friends on IG and its so nice to not feel alone on the days that I’m JUST keeping my head above water!

Congratulations on becoming a personal trainer! Go girl! What drove you to do the course?

I’ve grown up keeping fit and healthy from a young age and being in the military means fitness is at the forefront of what I do, but particularly since becoming a mum my true passion for health and fitness reached new heights, I saw the strength and tenacity of the human body through pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum which allowed me to wholeheartedly appreciate just how remarkable the human body is and how thankful we should be each day for it. Now as a PT, nothing excites me more knowing that I get to meet, interact with and connect with so many people everyday. I get to apply my ability, knowledge, experience and my sheer love of fitness to help enrich somebody else’s life and that is something I am immensely proud it. I’ve always believed that amazing things happen when your passion, purpose and professions come together and its for that reason that I find it so incredibly uplifting to be a part of someone’s journey in creating positive changes in living a stronger, healthier, happier life.

Since becoming a mumma to that handsome little Madden what have you learnt most about life?

I knew that having a child was going to be life changing, but wow is that an understatement, it’s the most positively life-altering experience one will ever go through – is it not? I cannot agree more on the saying that when a child is born, a mother is too; I’ve loved watching myself evolve as a person and finding myself lifted to new heights and achieving personal goals I didn’t see possible. Over the past year, through my son I have experienced more adventure than I ever thought imaginable. It truly is love beyond measure and with it my priorities have completely changed, my outlook on life and what truly makes me happy, and what matters most has been such an eye-opener for me. Motherhood is not only my life; it’s wholeheartedly my happiness, my passion, and my greatest achievement.

(This photo truly connected me to Nadine! Arghhh I love it).

A favourite #mumlife memory so far?

Oh my gosh, there are so many. I have no idea where to start. I really don’t think I could narrow it down to one favourite… I’d be lying if I said one of the funniest was when Madden decided to rip his nappy off and took a number two in his cot with this most evil laugh to follow – whilst I was trying to teach him to self-settle as I was talking to him via the monitor from another room…. Thank goodness it was the consistency and shape of a soggy chicken nugget (I kid you not!) But no really!! In all seriousness though, one to mention out of many would be Madden’s kisses! How good are kisses from our babies??? When I was pregnant I used to dream of kissing his lips, and during scans I would say over and over ‘I cant wait to smooch those tiny lips’. I remember so vividly the day he was born when I kissed him for the first time – F*** it was a zillion times better than I had ever dreamed of…Now we have this thing where I say give mummy a kissy-wissy, and he does the biggest ‘mwwwwwwahhhh’ as he leans in then it is followed with an open mouthed, super slobbery, super slimey lip-smacker…Nawww!! I treasure every single one, and I literally hang out for one of his kisses after a long day at work especially!!

What do you think attracts women to your social media platforms?

I’m simply sharing my health and fitness journey in relation to my life as a first-time mum, a full-time working mum as a Nurse and Personal Trainer, a devoted wife, how I juggle a career in the Armed Forces, all whilst trying to have somewhat of a social life and attempt to keep SANE as best as I can haha. I pride my social media on being a positive and supportive network and a communication hub to uplift, encourage and motivate other likeminded women – and not just those who are mothers.

I genuinely enjoy sharing my honest experiences and as I said whilst I aim for my page to be mostly motivating, positive and a fun hub, I likewise haven’t hesitated to share it all; the good, the bad and the indifferent. Honesty truly does lead to authenticity and I believe there is something to be said for those who demonstrate courage and strength in telling things how they really are.

It is important for us women to remind ourselves that not all images we see on social media are ‘real’. With the technology we have now so readily available, digital alterations and manipulating images can be done at the drop of a hat. We all have to remember that our reflection in the mirror DOES NOT define our worth and continually comparing ourselves to potentially unrealistic ‘perfect’ bodies, ‘perfect’ mums, ‘perfect’ lives can be toxic to our mental health. I want us women to band together and to feel confident and secure within ourselves, and to know that there is more than enough room for us all to make it in this world!!

I want us all to say goodbye to our inner critics, to be kinder to ourselves and our bodies. To gain a heightened sense of self-worth and self-respect regardless of what ‘ideal bodies’ are thrown in our faces everyday. It’s not about comparing ourselves to one another or about being better than anyone else but being proud of our own journey, owning our own unique story and improving ourselves (in whatever capacity) each and every day.

I’ve made some incredibly meaningful connections from social media and have been fortunate to meet up with a handful of instamums. I’ve been incredibly uplifted and inspired by so many of them (you know who you are!). Like me, they are simply everyday mumma’s, grounded with humble and realistic attitudes to match. I admire women who similar to me get a kick out of seeing other women do well and live by that quote I mentioned ‘Empowered women, Empower women’. Can I get an Ahhhh-men!

What is your favourite quote or mantra?

One of my favourites is ‘Exercise is as much as a gift to the mind as it is to the body’. As a first time mum, especially in those early days, training had been my coping mechanism whilst I adjusted to motherhood and got our routine down pat and my post-partum hormones had leveled out – mine were all over the shop, poor Dane!! It was then that I had also recognised that not only was exercise re-conditioning and re-strengthening my body but it was a total game changer (and free therapy!) when it came to my mental health.

I ensure that at least one session a week I leave my phone/ipod in my gym bag and leave my mind and body to train with no interruptions, in a world where we are so attached to our phones, dare to strip it back and be truly present with your training – just YOU and your mind! Do it – I highly recommend!!

How often do you find the time to move your body?

Anyone who knows me would know that training is an essential part of my day and has been for many years! I’ve found it to be crucial for my physical (and mental) health and overall wellbeing. My passion for keeping active and staying fit is something I do for ‘me’ but ultimately for my family too. I know I am a far better person, mum, wife, (PT and Nurse) when I have invested time in making my health and wellbeing a priority too. It honestly provides an outlet from the ongoing pressures of motherhood and any general life stressors that we all encounter along our journey. For me, it brings about a heightened sense of accomplishment and pride. It allows me to sweat out any of my days worries, makes me feel more energized, and overall has a positive effect on various facets of my life including my relationship with hubby, my family, my career, my goals and aspirations. It’s not about how you look (that is just a bonus side effect); it is about how it makes you feel – stronger, confident and well centred J Plus working in the busiest Emergency Department in Australia means that I witness some fairly ‘heavy’ medical emergencies so to shake off a tough or confronting day with my physical training is a must for me. You could say more than ever, my physical fitness and mental health and wellbeing is a necessity as I juggle motherhood and my professional working life.

Favourite active wear piece in your wardrobe?

Oh I wouldn’t be able to choose just one piece, what I can tell you though is that there are absolutely no shortages of Lorna Jane, Lululemon, Nike and Rockwear in my wardrobe… As a breastfeeding active mumma and one who supports home grown small business I’m also digging activewear by the incredible @mummactiv! Jo is another awesomely fit, humble, hard working charismatic Mumma who inspires me beyond words – Check @mummactiv out!!!

Do you and your man get time to go on a date? If so where do you both love to go?

To be completely honest, if we get to squeeze in a gym session together, I feel like that’s a smoking hot date for us! Haha…. Training together everyday is one of the things that I miss the most, he goes hard and I’m pretty competitive so training together is extreme! So when it does happen, I’m on cloud 9! On the flip side of the coin, it is somewhat embarrassing to even say this, but it was only a few weeks ago that hubby and I had our first ‘proper’ date since Madden was born. Surprisingly it wasn’t until we did this that we realised just how much we had become disconnected for the lack of a better word, not at all in a bad way, we have simply been so love struck with our baby Madden that we just didn’t take the time out just for each other and we realised the importance of bringing ‘us’ back. I’ll be completely honest in saying that since becoming parents, our relationship has taken the back seat. Although having a baby has meant a lot of changes for US as a couple, I’ve learnt that incredible things can happen when you learn to change and grow ‘together’. We might not get the time alone as often anymore, but I know that 9/10 times we’d choose family time altogether first, because that is when our hearts are truly at their fullest. Despite that, since that date at the races and a night to ourselves while Madden slept over at his grandparents for the first time, we’ve made a pact to one another that we will take time once a month for ‘date night’… We genuinely love family time with the 3 of us, so once a month seems very reasonable for us both for now J We are next planning a dinner at our favourite restaurant followed by a movie at the cinemas, we may even step it up a notch and go gold class! Go us! Mind you, bedtime is quite early for me usually, so I’ll probably be a DUD! (…..Dud date, Is definitely what you were thinking right?!) Haha…

Thanks so much for having me Alice, and if you are still with me thank you to those that have taken the time to read my #showtherealyou feature!

Spread Love, Nadine xo
