The Comfort Mama – Carissa Heath #behindthelabel

One of my favourite things about being a mum/health blogger is that I get to collaborate and network with the most amazing people. I not only love the brands/businesses/products that I collaborate with but I also am lucky enough to gain friendships with many of the business owners.

I recently started chatting with the gorgeous Carissa Heath from @the_comfortmama and have I loved getting to know her a little more. I know you will love her to and gain inspiration from this amazing #girlboss so I asked her if she would be featured in my #behindthelabel feature.

I have lived in my Comfort Mama dresses from the moment I received them in the mail. I alternate between the stripes and the dusty pink look. You can wear these dresses to bed, around the house, to the shops and to school drop of and still look like your nailing the luxe comfortable mamma style. #winning

I style mine with Connies and a nappy bag for outings or slippers and a cup of tea for lounging. They have the press stud buttons for easy access breastfeeding and the material just moves with your bod.

Anyway enough from me raving about this label, here is #behindthelabel with Carrisa Heath from The Comfort Mama

Congratulations on your new business, The Comfort Mama – a modern lounge dress that provides mummas with the ultimate comfort and style. Could you please tell us a little more about what drove you to create the label?

Well there was a few different reasons but the main reason being…. My sister, who has two little humans of her own (one is 5 and the other 2 and a half) suffered terribly for a few years with post-natal depression and all the ugly bits that come alongside this. It was so terrible to watch her go through this and have absolutely no idea how to help her, I felt extremely helpless. So seeing this firsthand has made me extremely passionate about helping other Mums on their journey into motherhood. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tiny humans… but let’s be real, they don’t need much! A little food, unconditional love and a place to sleep. The Mamas are the ones that need the love and support to raise these babes!

Whilst I was pregnant last year (2016) with my first little one I searched high and low for comfortable clothing to wear after the birth (or even in hospital), during what I envisioned would be one of the most uncomfortable times I would ever go through. I figured that if I felt comfortable in what I was wearing that it might just help me feel a bit better about… well, everything!

When I couldn’t find anything available in Australia I knew this was my opportunity to create something for Mums. So I set out to design a comfortable nursing-friendly lounge/house dress that could be worn everyday at home, when visitors unexpectedly pop around… or even to the shops for that quick nappy run! To some it might just look like a simple dress but it has been designed with so much more meaning and purpose. I wanted to provide ladies something to wear, from pregnancy, labour, nursing and beyond (instead of the regular pj’s or oversized daggy house clothes) that would make them feel a little bit better about themselves and how they look.

Can you tell us a little more about the woman behind the label The Comfort Mama?

My name is Carissa Heath and I guess you could call me The Comfort Mama! I became a Mum to my lovely little man in December 2016 and what a ride it has been so far!

My husband and I have been married for 4 years and together for 10. We are self-employed and have operated our own businesses for the past 6 years together (never work with your husband….trust me!!!!). We absolutely love running our businesses and working for ourselves and were lucky enough to sell one of our businesses in February last year up in Mackay, North Queensland. To say we were exhausted, tired and completely done was an understatement so the business sale could not have happened at a better time. We had worked ourselves silly and really lost each other in the process. About six weeks later, a trip to Bali plus a little reconnecting time and we had ourselves a lovely little surprise in the form of our son, Hendrix! So we packed up our life in Mackay and moved to the gorgeous Sunshine Coast (paradise on earth!). For the next few months we pretty much did a whole lot of nothing… and it was AMAZING! Just what the doctor ordered!

And along came our son 6 days before Christmas. Let me tell you, we got a whole lot more than we bargained for! We were never really completely into the whole ‘having kids’ thing. That might sound horrible but it was the truth. We loved working for ourselves and having the freedom to do what we wanted, when we wanted. Well…. weren’t we wrong. The day Hendrix was born our whole life changed. I changed. My husband completely changed into a person I never thought he would ever be – the most supportive, caring and considerate human when I really needed him the most. I remember sitting in my hospital bed two days after giving birth, crying on the phone to my sister about all the Mums out there that don’t have the support from their partner/family like I do ☹ it breaks my heart and makes me extremely grateful for my situation.

So it was at that point that I definitely knew I wanted to help Mums in some way. I wasn’t 100% sure how I would do it, but I knew that’s where my passion truly lies.

I read on your website that you donate $2 from every garment to cope.com, that is such a lovely idea to support mummas. Such a great corporation to support. Can you tell us a little more about The Centre For Perinatal Excellence and why you choose to support this charity?

This makes my heart smile a lot! It may only be a small contribution at this stage, but I’m so happy that I can donate something to this amazing charity. I actually came across their page on Instagram and had been following them for a few months. I really resonated with their content and loved the information they were putting out there so thought no better fit when deciding on a charity to support.

The Centre For Perinatal Excellence (cope.org.au) provides a great resource for reducing the impacts of emotional and mental health problems in the pre and post natal periods.  They work tirelessly to raise awareness and understanding, breaking the stigma that prevents women from identifying and seeking help during pregnancy and that first year following birth.

4. Your garments are currently on pre order when is the release date?

I have released stock of the Elle Rose Dusty Pink and the Sonny Grey/White Stripe which is extremely exciting!

I am using a small run manufacturer in Melbourne who handmakes each dress as to the delay on colours being released ☹ but she is working her butt off, trust me! The remainder of  colours will begin to arrive for purchase within the later half of August.

5. What is your favourite way to style your Comfort Mama dress?

Give me my pair of white converse shoes, a dry-shampoo filled top knot in my hair + my chosen TCM dress (side knot is a must) and I am sorted!

Tears and Tears by Brooke Meyer AKA @bouncingbackfrombirth

Tears and Tears

Written by Brooke Meyer from Bouncing Back From Birth.

I’m not going to sugar coat anything. The first night we brought our son home from the hospital there were tears – and tears. It is no coincidence to me that tear (as in cry) and tear (as in rip) share the same four letters.

There I was in the dead of winter sitting in excruciating pain breastfeeding at 3am for what seemed an eternity. It hurt to walk, it hurt to sit, my perineum throbbed and stung from post-partum bleeding. I was not O.K. with my second degree perineum tear. I begged the midwives during home visits, when will it get better? How can I make it better?

Give it time
It’s normal
Just push through

It is that last offering ‘just push through’ that inspired me to begin my journey into business – this business: Bouncing Back From Birth. In short, beautiful Mama’s and Mama’s-to-be, I don’t believe – even for a second – that anyone should ask you to ‘just push through’ your challenges. Over the past 2 years I’ve dedicated my time to finding solutions to support your bodies natural healing process and find comfort in those early weeks.

And, so that none of you ever have to push through or make do, here it is:

My Top 5 Products to Care for your Perineum Postpartum. #SaveMyVajayjay

The BodyICE Perineum Pad.

This lil’ slice of heaven get bonus points for versatility – it’s ability to be used as a warm AND cold compress means you get more bang for your buck and relief from discomfort. When heated you can fold into a V shape during pregnancy to relieve aches and pains from Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction/Pelvic Girdle Pain. Keep the heat going in labour and place directly onto the perineum. The warmth encourages the perineum to soften and stretch. It is an excellent solution for labouring Mama’s without access to a birthing pool or those who require foetal monitoring. Once your babe arrives refrigerate or freeze and apply to the perineum at 20 minute intervals to soothe your tender perineum. I guarantee the cool soft beads inside the Perineum Pad are infinitely more comfortable than a frozen condom.

A Peri Bottle.

The Peri Bottle is relatively unheard of here in Australia but our Sisters in North America have been embracing Peri Bottles for some time. It’s now accessible to you via Bouncing Back From Birth *high five*. One of the key recommendations from your care provider in managing your Perineum will be to keep the area clean and dry – this is to allow the area to heal and prevent infection. It’s not an easy feat with post partum bleeding! Fill your Peri Bottle with warm water and direct the flow over the perineal area as you wee, not only will the water take the sting out of urinating it will gently clean the area. Always very gently pat dry.

Postpartum Sitz Soak by The Hermosa Co.

Packed with magnesium rich bath salts, lavender, marshmallow root and calendula this highly concentrated Sitz Soak takes keeping the Perineal area clean and dry to a whole new level. Purposefully blended for the postpartum period, a Sitz Soak shouldn’t be confused with a Bath Soak (I’ve got those too!) Fill the bath to hip height and gently sit on your knees, allowing this divine handmade blend to soothe and heal. For Mama’s without a bath pair this Sitz Soak with the Peri Bottle above. Additional benefits include relaxation of tired muscles and improved circulation.

100% Pure Lavender Essential Oil by ECO.Aroma

So we all know about Lavender’s relaxation and stress reduction properties, but what about anti-microbial? This is a simple and effective way to keep the area clean and reduce your risk of infection while promoting healing. Essential Lavender Oil should never be taken internally, unless under the guidance of a professional and should always be diluted. Add up to 5 drops to a Sitz Bath or 5 drops per 500mls into a Peri Bottle.

Compression Wear.

At Bouncing Back From Birth we stock Solidea and SRC Health postpartum recovery compression wear. Both brands are TGA approved and offer medical grade even compression – your private heath provider may even provide a rebate, rock on! It’s absolutely imperative that if it’s compression wear that you are after that your chosen brand can provide a medical grade compression listing and is TGA approved as a medical device. If it’s not, you are simply not receiving the many benefits compression wear can bring such as increased muscle stimulation, reduced swelling and pain. Your compression wear can also support you in your c-section recovery or if you are experiencing Diastasis Recti.

And there you have it! Your light at the end of the tunnel. A big thank you to Alice for inviting me to share these products with you, if you have any questions about my full range or are after some personal recommendations please don’t hesitate to get in touch via email hello@bouncingbackfrombirth.com, Facebook, Instagram or carrier pigeon – what ever works for you!

All my very best for each and every one of you and your unique journey into motherhood and beyond.

Stay confident – You’ve got this!

#showtherealyou – Lou Carter AKA founder of @babylunoshop

My #showtherealyou girl this week is a #girlboss, a #mumma to two boys, a #basketballerswife,  a #traveller… and I could go on and on with the #hashtag titles for Mrs Lou Carter.
From the first time I spoke to Lou (over email), I was inspired straight away. She was so professional about collaborating together for her business Baby Luno,  yet she had such a calming, nurturing, aura about her and was so supportive to a hormonal pregnant mumma (in my first trimester) like me. I instantly clicked with Lou and we have continued to grow and blossom our friendship since that very first email over 6 months ago.
I haven’t actually met Lou in person because she has been running her business from Europe (even though it is Australian based), while her husband follows his dreams as a professional basketballer. I cannot wait till she returns as we can have a wine (maybe post breastfeed though haha).
I know you will love learning about how Lou manages her online business, deals with the everyday mumlife challenges and  travels Europe.
I introduce to you all …
Lou carter AKA founder of @babylunoshop
Favourite hot drink?

COFFEEEEE! I get way too excited when I about to have coffee and I drink way too much of it. I like it strong a completely black. The coffee is terrible in the UK (sorry UK readers) and I miss my Melbourne long blacks dearly.

Can you tell me who the REAL Lou Carter is?

Wow! Tough question! The short version – I am a mother of 2 boys (1 and 3 yrs old), wife to a professional basketball player, living in a different city every year and founder of online baby shop, babyluno.com

Here is the longer version…

I am originally from Sweden but I have hardly lived there. From age 2, I grew up in Luxembourg (a small country in the middle of Europe) then went to Sweden for 3 years of high school and then went to Australia to travel and met my (now) husband. I was head over heels so I decided to move to Australia for University at UNSW in Sydney.

My husband is a professional basketball player and usually his contracts are about 8-10 months so we move around a lot for his career. In the past 10 years we have lived in Sydney two separate times, Melbourne three separate times, twice in Adelaide, a stint in Perth, a year in Auckland New Zealand, three different cities in Sweden, lived in Spain for a few months and are currently living in Plymouth in the U.K. If someone asked me where my home is, I wouldn’t be able to give them an answer. My blood is Swedish and very proud of that beautiful country but when I am in Sweden, I feel like a little bit of a tourist. I probably feel more at home in Australia now but I definitely feel like a tourist there too. I do have 2 little Aussie boys now though who have that beautiful Aussie accent :). I am pretty good at just making wherever we are, our home. Home is definitely just where the heart is.

My two sons are 3 and 16 months. I am absolutely loving being a mother. There are definitely tough days, especially when dealing with sleep deprivation and we live far away from family and friends so we don’t get much of a break but seeing these creatures, that I made, develop is the coolest thing in the world. To be honest, I had no big interest in kids before I had my own. I was very career driven, loved traveling and loved a party but now I feel that children are the most important thing in life – both mine and other children. So that is one way how the REAL me has changed a lot in recent years.

My newest baby is my online baby shop called Baby Luno babyluno.com, which is based in Australia. My career background is in marketing and especially online marketing so I decided to make use of that and joining it with my passion of babies. It is only over a year old so it is still taking off but I love having my own business especially as a mother. I have something that is mine and something to do other than just being a mum and I am continuously learning new things about having your own business. Running the business having two toddlers around comes with some challenges and running a business from overseas is also challenging at times. The time difference means that the best time to chat to customers and suppliers is in my morning but this is usually when I have the kids. I do have a lot of mum-guilt as I hate being on my laptop or phone in front of the kids so I really try not to be, only for a few urgent matters. However, my husband does help with the kids a lot. Just as I am supportive of my husband’s dreams, he is incredibly supportive of my dreams and goals so we make it work quite well.

These are the things that make up the REAL Louise Carter but other than that I am quite open-minded and go with the flow, but also quite passionate about things I care about. I try and always look on the bright side of life, I laugh quite easily (so my husband thinks he’s the funniest person ever), I am very close to my family even though we are all spread out, love meeting new people and love sports!

What drove you to create your Instagram account and online business Baby Luno?

I have my personal Instagram account @mrsloucarter that I created mainly to keep in touch with all family and friends around the world and to keep them up to date with what we are doing. Since we live so far away from all our friends and family, it is a nice way to share with everyone what happened that day since I don’t have many others to chat to.

When we were living in New Zealand when my first boy was just a baby, I found it so difficult to find the baby products that I wanted and I would try to find them online but only American websites would pop up that didn’t ship to where I was so the idea for Baby Luno was born. I finally launched the website when I was 7 months pregnant with my second baby. It was maybe not ideal timing but also because of that, I was my main audience so I would market the way that I would find attractive and bring in products that I loved. I run the Baby Luno Instagram account myself @babylunoshop. I try and add a few bits and pieces that are not just marketing, like some blog posts from, for example, the amazing Alice in Healthyland :). You want to give your followers some extra value. It’s all a learning process.

Not many people know this about you, but you run your online boutique Baby Luno, you are a mumma and you support your husband by living overseas with him while he chases his dream? Tell us more how you do this with children? This blows my mind! What a life! Amazing Lou!

Aww, thank you! Well we started moving around due to my husband’s career before kids and before Baby Luno. It was exciting getting to live in different places so I was loving it. It was maybe not ideal for my career. I was lucky enough to get jobs everywhere we went but we did decide to have children when we did since that way I didn’t need to work for a while and could just focus on raising them.

Of course, moving around does get more difficult when kids are involved, especially when you throw in different time zones. Sleeping routines are not always easy to follow and I am one sleep-deprived mama. Right now we are in the process of moving again and I am starting to sell and give away a few of the kids’ toys and it is not easy but I am so impressed at how well they are taking it. My 3-year old is now really excited to give away his toys and the other day he said “the boys who don’t have any toys will get happy”. That melted my heart. We may be raising a little minimalist. We have also started telling him how he will start at a new Swedish Kindy soon and he is so excited about it. I am amazed at how adaptable children can be – probably more than us adults.

There are definitely some challenges to living like we do but we just choose to focus on the amazing positives. We get to live in different parts of the world – really become a part of the culture, connect with people that we would have never met otherwise, see how a country really works and have very different life experiences. We love taking advantage of these opportunities especially when the kids are young before they start school. In the end, it is all about your story.

My husband’s career will not go on forever so we will settle down in one place soon but being from different parts of the world, I am sure we will always be travelling a little bit. It will eventually be nice to have our own place and decorate the kids rooms with our own furniture that we love and most importantly make really deep connections with people, be able to attend our friends’ weddings, birthdays etc that we have missed way too many of.

What is your favourite quote or mantra?
My favourite quote/mantra is definitely “The happiest people don’t HAVE the best of everything, they MAKE the best of everything”. It doesn’t matter what you have, where you live or what the weather is like, you can still make life into the best adventure by just deciding to be happy and making it the best. It is all about your attitude.

My husband and I also always have this saying when crazy things happen or offers come up from teams in cities far away, we always just say “It’s all about your story”. Make life the best story you can. When you are lying on your deathbed, that is what you will remember.

How often do you find the time to move your body?

I go to the gym at least twice a week where I either do a Body Pump class or HIIT class and take my boys with me to the creche there that they love. This is a booked in time that I never miss so no excuse. I get in to different routines in every place we move to. It depends what is best accessible to me – sometimes it’s bikram yoga or playing sports or just running but I have never felt in better shape than what I am in right now, which I am quite proud of. I may also have my boys to thank for that since I am constantly running after them (who are both sports crazy) so I hardly stop moving my body.

Favourite activewear?

I almost only wear SIX30 activewear. The company was started by one of my friends and I absolutely love her designs. She is also one of the people that inspired me to start Baby Luno because she also runs the website luxefitness.com.au which is a one-stop activewear shop collecting the best activewear. I love supporting small businesses and especially when it’s someone I know. I also loved Cadenshae’s nursing sports bras while breastfeeding – this is why I started stocking their products on babyluno.com

Something you practice daily that promotes self love?

I try and listen to a motivational YouTube video every day to get my mind straight. My favourite is Tony Robbins. He talks a lot about how you are in control of how you feel – it is a decision. The thing that always lifts my spirit though is just putting on some great music and dancing around. It usually turns into a family dance party since my two boys love to dance and sometimes hubby joins in too.

Favourite product/outfit currently on Baby Luno?

I love every single product on Baby Luno. That is why I bring them in because I want to make my favourites more available to other mothers because I had trouble finding all the things that I wanted when my boys were babies. I am so impressed at all the mumpreneurs out there that have created these amazing innovative products. The nursing activewear is definitely a best seller. Also I am really trying to collect the best baby bags out there and have brought in my favourite Swedish baby brand, Elodie Details, to make it easily accessible for all my fellow Aussies :).

What advice would you give to other people out there wanting to start a blog/business?

Just decide to do it and decide that it will be a success! You don’t have to have all the answers before you start, you can figure it out along the way. Just make a decision about something and go 100% – if it is the wrong decision, you will either quickly realise it or you will be so invested in it that you will make that the right decision in the end and you will be a lot further than if you hadn’t made a decision at all so don’t be afraid. Everyone makes mistakes but you just make sure that you learn from each mistake so the more mistakes you make, the better you will be because you will have learnt so much.

It is also great to have a mentor. Talk to someone that has done it before and get some tips rather than trying to reinvent the wheel on your own. They would have already made some mistakes and learned from them so then you don’t need to make those mistakes again and you can learn from their mistakes as well.

Packing my hospital & baby bag for the labour & birth of my second child.

Photoshoot photographed and styled by Tahlia @wyldefolkstudio_

Sponsored by Baby Luno & Storksak

Storksak Noa Baby Bag. Available from Baby Luno.

Packing my hospital bag for my first pregnancy was very exciting. I Pinterested all these hospital bag lists and I was so excited with what I packed into my suitcase, ready for my babies arrival. When the time came, my husband grabbed the bags and brought them to hospital with us. I thought I was so organised, but boy was I wrong. I had really over packed! I had so much stuff that I actually couldn’t find what I needed, when I needed it. I had to much of the stuff I didn’t need and not enough of what I actually really needed. I was so overwhelmed. So I made a promise to myself that next time I would pack a little lighter and bring more of the essentials rather than all the extras.

I have put together a list of what I need and wished I had put in the first time, for both my hospital bag and my babies nappy bag.

#aliceloves @krewactive feat. Bloembee Blooms

Thank you to everyone that read last weeks first ever #aliceloves mini Instagram & blog segment featuring a Posy of Bloembee Blooms. Your support meant so much to me and thank you for all the lovely likes and comments too, you made my week. I always get so anxious starting a new segment. I look forward to sharing a product or brand I love with you weekly.

This week I am excited to be telling you a little more about the Krew Active Cleo Express Feeder Crops. If any of you have ever read my Alice In Pregnancyland blog, you would know that I am a huge fan and have worn these crops throughout my pregnancy. I love to wear bright active wear so these two vibrant colours that Krew Active have to offer totally did it for me.

Firstly a little about Krew Actice – Krew Active is founded by Kylie Rae Anderson and was launched in the Australian market in 2015. Kylie is a mumma for 3 and fektvtheir was a need in the market to start the maternity and nursing activewear company, due to feelings of being ignored when seeking maternity activewear in the major activewear chain stores.

Her vision is to allow mums to experience the convenience of breastfeeding on the go and allow more opportunities to stay fit, get active and remain social while feeding discreetly. Her garments combine style, performance, support and comfort.

img_5935

I have found this crop great to wear throughout my three trimesters. The Cleo Express Feeding Bra has a wide non roll band feature, which is soft & comfortable providing support for your growing bump. I have worn these crops during high intensity workouts, yoga and for my everyday walking.

I look forward to using the crops for my post pregnancy exercise routine too ( I will keep you posted on the support of them with breasfeeding boobies). I love that they have a quick accessible clip, so you can promptly nurse your baby on demand (I have been practicing haha). When I was breastfeeding my first born, Cruz it was so hard to just lift a non feeding crop up to breasfeed him prior or after the gym session. So I cannot wait to trial these crops out.

Breastfeeding in my active wear.

It can be very tricky to find a nursing bra that can deliver on all fronts.

I was looking for comfort, support and something that still fit when my boobs were forever changing shape due to feeds. I was after something that did all the above plus I could workout in it too.

I remember my first high, interval, intensity workout. All I can say is ouch. I wore my usual pre pregnancy crops (mind you I only used to have small size A mozzie bites ha) to hold up my new big full boobies. They bounced every where. My nipples hurt and they had no support at all. When I was doing sprints, I almost cried because they hurt so much. Trying to feed a hungry baby after my workout was a night mare too. I had to try and pull down straps and they would pull right round my neck. I needed a good active nursing bra.

I came across Rob, from Yummy Mummy Lingerie on her Instagram page @yummy_mummy_lingerie. It was so refreshing to get the answers I needed promptly to my comments I made on her page. Before I knew it was getting sized up for a nursing, sports bra. Yes I was doing this all over the Internet too. This was perfect for me too as I had a new born baby, I didn’t have lots of spare time to be off trying of nursing, sports bras either.

A few days later I received the parcel with the @Cadenshae nursing bra. I tried it on and was a great fit. I even felt like I got a pair of new boobies from the shop too. They made my boobs look great.

The bra contained little clasps to undo to make feeding access, quick and easy to do. I was able to top Cruz up quickly at the gym too, pre workout.

It ticked all the right boxes, plus more. I loved the colours they came in too. Perfect to match up with my colourful activewear wardrobe too.

Yummy Mummy Lingerie specialise in maternity and post pregnancy, so they have a wide range of products and advice to suit your everyday nursing needs.

Being a active mum, I spend a lot of time in my active wear. From being comfortable at home, shopping, walking and training at Hiit I wanted something that would accomodate all mine and my babies needs. Something I could use everyday.

Here are some of the nursing/activewear bras that Yummy Mummy have to offer for training.

– Everyday Nursing Bra for general wear.

– Fit2feed Activewear Bra for medium to low impact activity.

– Ultimate Nursing Sports Bra for high impact exercise and larger busted mama’s.

I have washed these bras several times too and each time come up as good as knew. They have kept their shape and colour. This is something that is truly important to me when purchasing a bra. I cannot stand when the material that covers the breast goes lumpy. I believe these bras were built to last.

I hope you enjoyed my product review on the Cadenshae nursing, sport bras. They are seriously amazing. I highly reccomend them. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask myself or Rob from Yummy Mummy Lingerie. Happy to help out.

Have a great Wednesday Peeps!!
